You can stay relevant and innovative in\u00a0 this rapidly evolving world via life long learning<\/p>\n

“And it is your leadership and character that defines your success,”\u00a0 says Teh Wee Chye who is Malayan Flour Mills Bhd (MFM) deputy\u00a0 executive chairman and managing director.<\/p>\n

Addressing graduates at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) 39th convocation ceremony\u00a0 session 4 at its campus in Kampar, Perak on Aug 18, 2024,\u00a0 Teh says having the\u00a0 integrity and resilience, and\u00a0 being highly adaptable and visionary\u00a0 will enable\u00a0 a person to make a positive impact on the\u00a0 rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n

“The rapidly evolving world is presenting many opportunities and challenges alike\u00a0 ,”\u00a0 Teh says, adding that success is also about being able to\u00a0 bounce back from setbacks and keep going.<\/p>\n

While food security and climate change are two rising concerns worldwide\u00a0 and inter-connected , Teh says\u00a0 they (concerns) also provide career and relevant business opportunities at the same time.<\/p>\n

‘This is\u00a0 one area\u00a0 graduates could explore and venture in,\u00a0 not only as a career,\u00a0 but also\u00a0 to help ensure enough of food supply for the people.”<\/p>\n

With\u00a0 between 4.7 billion and\u00a0 4.8 billion of the world’s 8.05 billion population in Asia, the focus on ensuring enough food in the region offers vast opportunities for graduates from multi disciplines to apply their skills and make an impact.<\/p>\n

Describing this century as an Asian century, he says the region’s remarkable and continuous\u00a0 economic growth are translated into good economic and career opportunities.<\/p>\n

In 2024,\u00a0 Asia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is between\u00a0 $40 trillion and\u00a0 $ 45 trillion.<\/p>\n

This amount includes China’s GDP of between $19 trillion and\u00a0 $20 trillion – the second largest economy after the United States which has a GDP of between $ 27 trillion and $28trillion.<\/p>\n

And Asean alone has a GDP of\u00a0 between\u00a0 $3.5trillion and\u00a0 $4 trillion.<\/p>\n

Teh points out that the world is undergoing a lot of changes and urged graduates to acquire cross cultural\u00a0 skills and a deep understanding of global connections to stay relevant.<\/p>\n

“As you step into your career, consider how you can contribute in the vital sectors like food security.<\/p>\n

“Consider change as a companion.\u00a0 Continue life long learning to stay relevant,” says the 70-year-old Teh.<\/p>\n

MFM which started off in 1966 as a flour milling company is now a staple food manufacturing company; majoring in flour milling, poultry integration and\u00a0 aquaculture.<\/p>\n

Teh who has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and a Master\u2019s Degree in Ship Building and Shipping Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA\u00a0 joined MFM as deputy mill manager in 1976\u00a0 and promoted to plant manager two years later.<\/p>\n

In 1979, he was made the project manager in charge of the MFM’s\u00a0 entire expansion plans.<\/p>\n
