SHENTI JIAN KANG, WAN SHI RU YI<\/em> (good health, all the best in Chinese),\u00a0 a trader greets customers doing their last minute Chinese New Year (CNY)\u00a0 shopping.<\/p>\n

His sales pitch – good tidings\u00a0 with flowers – draws customers to his flower stall in the SPPK market in Ipoh on Sunday morning (30 Jan).<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The flower –\u00a0 Wan Zi Qian Hong<\/em> (tens of thousands of purple and thousands of red ) – an idiom on a garden in full bloom is among his most saleable items.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He says the flower conveys\u00a0 good health,\u00a0 happiness and longevity.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A pot of Wan Zi Qian Hong<\/em> is priced at RM12 and RM35 for a pot of lime tree or\u00a0 Kum Kut.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n

According to him,\u00a0 it takes six months to grow the Wan Zi\u00a0<\/em> Qian Hong.<\/em><\/div>\n

The timing is such that they will bloom during\u00a0 CNY.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I bought his last three pots of Wan Zi\u00a0 Qian Hong<\/em> while another shopper snapped up the last two pots of Kum Kut<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0( a symbol of prosperity<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
On a more serious note,\u00a0 he says farmers and traders are treading cautiously this round.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Besides the pandemic, he says the increase in the price of\u00a0 fertilisers and\u00a0 pesticides and labour shortage have also\u00a0 dampen the market.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
A trader who sells cut flowers says there are not many varieties this round.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to her, economic uncertainty,\u00a0 financial constraints and\u00a0 labour shortage saw many farmers cutting down on their production.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Her advice is to buy flowers early as stock is limited.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Among her saleable items is the yellow hulu<\/em> (gourd) fruit – a symbol of good health, productivity and wealth.<\/div>\n
