of life.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The world tin market crash in the mid 1980s saw many mine workers turned to\u00a0 gold fish rearing &#8211; turning ex mining ponds into fish farms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Fish\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MAPo-dbUecQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" 18 km from Ipoh city centre,\u00a0 gradually rose to become one of the top exporters of gold fish .<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The rest is history.<\/div>\n<div fish in\u00a0 Gopeng.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He also imports and exports the fish to countries like\u00a0 India, Vietnam, Thailand and\u00a0 Philippines.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Chalking up 20 years in the industry, a<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0typical working day for him starts at 8.00 am and he only calls it a day 12 hours dir=\"auto\">Perseverance: Ornamental fish rearing is labour intensive.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">At 51, Wong Choon Ming has chalked up 30 plus years as a fish farmer, and is still counting.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He says he started off with gold fish and has switched to Arowana some time ago.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Choon Ming says Arowana, also known as dragon fish (long yu in Chinese ), is a symbol of good luck and prosperity, and majority of\u00a0the Arowana from Gopeng\u00a0 go to the China market,<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Fish farmer Chin Kean Wei, 56, says it is a tough business and he is glad that farmers in Gopeng are close and help each other to stay competitive in the market.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Kean Wei says he also counts himself lucky as his wife Aw Chen Chen, 48,\u00a0 helps him in the fish farm .<\/div>\n<div demand for ornamental fish peaks\u00a0 during winter and ahead of the Lunar New Year.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">It may be end of year and holiday season but work comes first, says Kean Wei.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">A typical working day for Kean Wei is between 7am and 9.00pm.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Law Tong Hai says his\u00a0 passion for ornamental fish brings joy in the business.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">This is\u00a0 important as the line between work and personal time is blur in the life of a fish farmer.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;We must be hands on though we have workers to do the job,&#8221; says Tong Hai.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Apart from experience, he says continuing research\u00a0 to upgrade fish rearing methods is also important.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Using\u00a0 pandan plants to filter the excretion from the fish is\u00a0 a result of research, he says, drawing my attention to the fresh aroma of the plant during my visit to his farm.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0While large scale fish rearing using concrete ponds is inevitable, Tong Hai believes there are\u00a0 ways to create an environment that
